In honour of International Women’s Day, we're taking time to celebrate and recognise all the amazing women working at the Business Design Centre and across our community.

International Women’s Day is Saturday 8th March 2025 and we are delighted to honour the women of the BDC, as well as those from our resident businesses and events. International Women’s Day celebrates the tremendous achievements of women all across the world and at the BDC, we are lucky to have a great team of strong and empowered women who we support, acknowledge, and reward today and every day.

This year’s theme is Accelerate Action, which is a worldwide call to acknowledge strategies, resources, and activity that positively impact women’s advancement, and to support and elevate their implementation. So we asked some of our staff about what advice they would give to their younger self or a young person coming up in the their careers…

My advice would be that the event industry thrives on connections, so take advantage of every networking opportunity. Build and nurture relationships, always striving to be someone others can trust and rely on. These connections can open doors to exciting new opportunities.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, make mistakes, take opportunities and take the leap. Everything happens for a reason and you need to trust the process.

My advice would be to believe in yourself and be honest about where you go and to always try your most, try not to go back but leave a door open in case. For whatever reason, as a door closes, extra windows will open.

My advice to my younger self would be to believe in myself and trust that I know what I am doing.

Don't be afraid to get inspiration or support from people in your wider networks, both from within and outside of the industry. Remember, we were all at the start of a journey once! Also, keep a record of your highlights and achievements, no matter how small they might seem at the time - sometimes we look up and can't see how far we've truly come.
Kate Vandenburg - Marketing & Communications Director

I would say (to my younger self) to believe in yourself and your abilities and to trust the process to succeed and always be kind and open to everyone, as you can learn a lot from them.

The advice I would give my younger self is that you have this, just be confident and believe in yourself.

The advice I would give my younger self is to gain hands-on experience by volunteering, internships and shadowing experienced planners.

My advice would be to put yourself out there to take as many opportunities as possible to learn and meet new people. Also having confidence in yourself, your ability and your knowledge.
